  The Peaceable Kingdom, c. 1846 by Edward Hicks (American, 17801849). The gathering of great cats, a bird of prey, even a bear, alongside far meeker creatures, such as children, a lamb, and cattle, might seem an event doomed to end in bloodshed, but Edward Hicks (17801849) was a devout Quaker, and this subject, which he treated in more than sixty paintings, is an illustration of that utopian future described by Isaiah: The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. In the background, a group of European colonists, including William Penn, are presenting a treaty to the Lenape Indians, from whom Penn bought land near Philadelphia for 1,200 pounds.
